Lulu’s Rainbow Feast

Lulu’s Rainbow Feast

Children’s Book Illustration

About the Project

Lulu’s Rainbow Feast is a vibrant and engaging picture book written by early childhood teacher and nutrition specialist Linda Rigby. The story promotes healthy eating habits and celebrates the joy of food, family, and colour. Through playful language and imaginative storytelling, it introduces children to the idea that nutritious foods can be fun, exciting, and magical.

Deliverables:

21 fully illustrated pages, Character design and development, Storyboard sketches for client approval, Font placement and book design, and Cover design for both softcover and hardcover editions.

My Role & Process

I collaborated closely with Linda to bring her vision to life. We began with initial character concepts and storyboard sketches based on the manuscript, ensuring the pacing, expressions, and visual storytelling aligned with her goals. Once the sketches were approved, I moved on to creating the full-colour illustrations, using a friendly and vibrant palette to capture the warmth and playfulness of the narrative.

Each illustration was thoughtfully planned to enhance the text while keeping young readers engaged through movement, expressive characters, and a sense of wonder. The book design was developed with readability in mind, pairing clean, legible type with illustrations that flow across spreads to guide the reader’s eye.

The Outcome

The finished book is a lively and engaging resource for both children and parents. The illustrations bring Lulu’s world to life with colour and vibrancy, making healthy foods feel exciting and approachable. By pairing friendly unicorn characters with a rainbow-inspired palette, the visuals spark curiosity and keep young readers immersed in the story from start to finish.

The careful balance of design and illustration ensures the book flows smoothly, with type that is easy to read aloud during shared storytimes. Beyond the narrative, the inclusion of parent tips and activity ideas makes the book not just entertaining but also practical, giving families tools to encourage healthier eating in everyday life.

Overall, Lulu’s Rainbow Feast succeeds as both a joyful picture book and an educational tool. It was rewarding to see how the illustrations supported the author’s vision and helped create a book that can inspire children to form positive relationships with food while enjoying the magic of reading together.
