Garry's Mod - Video Game Assets

Star Wars-Themed Game Assets and UI Design

As a graphic designer for a Star Wars-themed Garry’s Mod server, I was responsible for designing and creating a wide range of in-game assets and user interface elements to enhance the overall gameplay experience and visual identity of the server. Garry’s Mod is a sandbox game built on the Source engine that allows players to manipulate objects and experiment with physics, and it’s often used to host custom game modes created by the community. One popular mode is Star Wars roleplay, where players take on the roles of characters within the Star Wars universe, such as clone troopers or Jedi, and participate in structured missions, military simulations, and social interactions set within that theme. My design work helped bring immersive visual consistency to this roleplay environment.

Weapon Ammo Bar

One of my contributions was the weapon UI system, which displays essential information such as the magazine count, ammo remaining, and reserved ammunition. Designed in a modern black-and-white style, this UI complemented the futuristic Star Wars aesthetic while aligning with the preferences of the server administrators. The layout was created with clarity and functionality in mind, helping players quickly assess their resources during fast-paced moments.

DEFCON Alert System

I also developed a clean and efficient DEFCON system, which appears at the top of the screen to inform players of the current security status or threat level on the server. Each level is colour-coded to clearly indicate urgency:

  • Red for DEFCON 1: Evacuation
  • Orange for DEFCON 2: Lockdown
  • Yellow for DEFCON 3: Threat imminent
  • Green for DEFCON 4: Possible threat
  • Blue for DEFCON 5: Normal duties

This system plays a vital role in communicating game-state changes during events or emergencies, with a design that integrates seamlessly into the rest of the UI.

HUD Display - XP Bar and DEFCON Alert

Another HUD feature I designed was a custom XP bar, located at the bottom of the screen. It displays the user’s current XP, their rank, and progress toward the next level. The smooth transitions and polished appearance of this element helped elevate the server’s overall look and made progression tracking more intuitive and visually appealing.

Boss Health Bar

Another notable feature I designed was the boss bar, which is used during server events when a boss is nearby. It displays the boss’s name along with a health bar to help players track progress during combat. The boss bar has been well received by the Garry’s Mod community, with 192 reviews on Steam averaging 4 stars. While I did not handle any of the programming or development, I was responsible for the full visual design.

104th Wolfpack Battalion Dispersers Unit Models

I also contributed to character model creation by designing custom clone trooper models, including a specialised disperser unit for the 104th Wolfpack battalion. These models were inspired by the ARF troopers seen in The Clone Wars series and featured additional customisation to give them a fierce, battle-ready look. As reconnaissance and sniper units, they were equipped with appropriate gear and camo textures to support stealth and tactical play in the field. While I did not create the final in-game models myself, I was responsible for the concept and design work, which guided the visual direction of the model.

104th Dispersers Unit Model Turnaround Design

Beyond the main HUD UI and character work, I also produced supporting graphics such as signage, icons, and other illustrations for the server. Working on these projects have allowed me to combine UI/UX design, illustration, and asset creation in a video game environment. It was a valuable experience in designing functional, immersive assets tailored to both gameplay needs and a specific visual universe.
